Flashback Friday: Potato Boy’s Room

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Friday, July 13th 2012   under: Home

A couple weeks ago, I shared pictures of what the second floor of the house looked like last year at closing. These pictures were listed as bedroom 1: Potato Boy ended up claiming this room. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but the carpet in this room was a pretty dicey – it was […]

Letting Loose

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Thursday, July 12th 2012   under: Family

Prior to our unplanned “vacation” a couple weeks back, we had plans on traveling out of town for a very close friend’s wedding last weekend. Needless to say with the DW on bed rest, that wasn’t happening now. Since everyone was looking forward to it, the kiddos’ grandparents offered to take Sissy and Potato Boy […]

Red Raspberry Plants

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Wednesday, July 11th 2012   under: Garden

Early this spring my parents offered us some red raspberry shoots. They have a well established patch and in the early spring new shoots like to spread into their garden. So, one evening after work I stopped by to clean their garden of shoots – I ended up taking home seventy 8 – 10″ shoots […]

Tasty Tuesday – Fresh Salsa

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Tuesday, July 10th 2012   under: Food

No one leave their comment yet

I’m going to try to start something a little different for Tuesdays by having a recipe to share. Maybe something we just tried for the first time, a family favorite, or something stolen from the secret family cookbook – ok, there really isn’t any secret family cookbook – not because there aren’t any secret family […]

Attack Of The Beetles!

LuLu and I were playing in the yard the other night when LuLu spotted the neighbor cutting hay. She would point and announce “I see it!” each time she would see the cab and smoke stack of the tractor over the top of the corn between us and the hay field. It lasted for about […]

Update: The Pumpkin Patch – Crop Failure

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Sunday, July 8th 2012   under: Family, Garden

Despite their best efforts, it appears that the kiddos will not have Indian Corn to sell with their pumpkins this fall. Unfortunately, it seemed doomed from the start. The seed was poor to germinate and what did poke through the ground did so over a 2 or 3 week period. Then every time the wind […]

The Onion Experiment

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Saturday, July 7th 2012   under: Garden

Don’t tell the kiddos, but we use a lot of onions when cooking. They add flavor to so many things – stews, soups, hash browns, fajitas, browned hamburger used in casseroles, and of course fresh salsa – just to name a few. The last few years, I’ve been freezing a quart or two of sliced […]

Flashback Friday: Sissy’s Room

A couple weeks ago, I shared pictures of what the second floor of the house looked like at closing. These pictures were listed as bedroom 2: Sissy ended up picking this room to be hers. It was actually her second choice. Her first choice was the attic. The attic is a full, walk-up attic with […]

Hanging Out With The Grandparents

Posted by The Dirt Road Home in Thursday, July 5th 2012   under: Family

No one leave their comment yet

With all the excitement last week, the kiddos ended up spending some time with each of their grandparents at some point during the week. Some of this time was already planned, while other visits were the result of our unexpected stay in the hospital. Either way, the kiddos had loads of fun with each grandparent […]

Fireworks

So when I picked LuLu up from daycare yesterday one of her teachers said LuLu talked about nothing but fireworks all day. It came as a shock to me. With the DW on bed rest, and Potato Boy and Sissy away for the night, we weren’t planning on any fireworks – and we hadn’t mentioned […]

After receiving a tip from a family friend, my wife and I ventured down a dusty road for the first time together in search of a house that was for sale by owner. The potential was there: wood floors buried beneath dated carpet, solid wood pocket doors surrounded by 100 year old trim, and a faded screen door leading to a covered porch complete with a white wooden swing. So, in July of 2011 my wife and I became only the third family to own this 100+ year old two-story farm house and surrounding acreage on a quiet dusty road in rural Iowa. What you’ll find on these pages is the story of what comes next.
